6 Sleeping Positions And Their Effects On Your Health

Getting good sleep is extremely important for maintaining our health, mind, body, and our mood, when we already spend a big part of our lives asleep. While every adult needs a minimum of 6 to 7 hours sleep per night, this is easier said than done. Sleeping problems can be caused by a number of reasons, like unhealthy eating habits before going to sleep. But did you know that the position in which you sleep most often, can also impact your health? It turns out to be a very good question to discuss over here. Let’s take a look at six common sleeping positions and what they do to your health and body.

  • Sleeping on your back with your arms at your side” makes it easier for our head, stomach, neck and spine to align and keep it in a neutral position, which is good. No extra pressure or curves are being added to the back as long as you don’t use too many pillows.
  • On your back, arms up”- this so called “Starfish” position is also good and healthy for your back, neck and stomach. Also, it helps to prevent facial wrinkles and skin breakouts. This can also cause snoring and having your arms up can put pressure on nerves, leading toclick herepain in your shoulders.
  • Sleeping on your stomach”- this position can improve digestion but it’s never advised because it doesn’t support the natural curve of your spine and can put pressure on joints and muscles that can lead to pain, tingling and numbness.
  • Sleeping all curled up into a ball with your knees drawn up and your chin tilted down”- this position, called “the foetus position”, might feel comfortable temporarily, but this can lead to back pain, neck pain and wrinkles. It can also lead to problems in breathing.
  • Sleeping on your side with both arms down” is the position best for your spine and it also reduces back and neck pain. While it reduces sleep apnea, it can contribute to skin aging and facial wrinkles.

Your side with your arms straight down”- This position has many of the same benefits like previous position but any side sleeping can cause arm and shoulder pain due to restricted blood flow and pressure on the nerves.


Sleeping on your back is generally considered as the best position but people tend to snore in this position more than those in any other position and sleep apnea are also strongly associated with sleeping on the back. Importance of choosing a better sleeping position can get a better night’s rest with less un-comfort ability in the morning.
